Universal Principles of Design is shaping up to be the best, most comprehensive design book I’ve ever read. With a subtitle like 125 Ways to Enhance Usability, Influence Perception, Increase Appeal, Make Better Design Decisions, and Teach through Design, the text was bound to be amazing!
UPD contains two-page descriptions of design principles in alphabetical order. To help understand how to apply these principles, a short explanation appears alongside a well-designed image. Since the design principles appear in the book in alphabetical order, a fantastic “Contents” section is organized into five sections like “How can I influence the way a design is perceived?” and “How can I increase the appeal of a design?”
Some examples of design principles include the picture superiority effect, hierarchy, layering, and progressive disclosure. One reviewer on Amazon defined this book as a “dictionary,” and I completely agree. This is your design dictionary! My full review will come shortly as I finish reading UPD in all its glory.
