Although I first found myself distracted by the table of people behind her, Julie Burstein’s “4 Lessons in Creativity” is a mesmerizing TED Talk about creativity.  I love her impromptu speaking when her prop doesn’t behave as planned.  I love the multimedia storytelling from others Burstein incorporates into her talk.  I especially love her ideas about embracing experience, challenge, limitation, and loss… Creators must not be afraid to create despite the existence of these four in our lives.

On Friday, when I came home from an insanely long day of work, my husband handed me a package from the library.  I’d forgotten I’d even asked to check out Sir Ken Robinson’s Out Of Our Minds, and since the book had been such a long waiting list, I assumed I’d get it in sometime in 2013.  I started reading it this morning, and I love it!

Inspiration: David Kelley’s How To Build Your Creative Confidence

As I mentioned in my current reading list, after watching David Kelley’s TED Talk (below), I stumbled upon Tom Kelley’s book The Art of Innovation written with Jonatahn Littman.  David Kelley is the founder and chairman of IDEO while brother Tom is IDEO’s general manager.

Building creative confidence is something we should all make a priority.  In his TED Talk,  David Kelley asks us to think of creativity as a process that we can ALL develop.  Creativity isn’t some talent bestowed only on certain people; it is a trait we all inherently have.  If we’ve forgotten how to be creative, we must learn to see creativity in a different way, to focus on creativity as a process, and to build back up that creative confidence we had when we were younger.

Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love, delivers a remarkable TED Talk on creativity.  Watch it here:

While I did not like her book, her TED Talk is funny, thoughtful, and engaging.  After her successful text, Elizabeth Gilbert says people treated her as if she were “doomed” and talked about the pressure of creativity after a bestselling book.  The “fear-based” reactions to being an artist are what stops the creative process, and I love Gilbert’s idea that we all have a genius living inside of us instead of the idea that we ourselves are geniuses.  It takes the pressure off of the creative process.
